Similarly to natural living systems, Artificial Symbiont interacts with its surroundings. It alters and changes its form according to its own needs and the needs of the living systems in its presence. With some of them (human beings in particular), it has developed symbiotic relationship.

Interactive installation in this exhibition is an illustration of this principle.
Visitors influence the image and create the sound every time they enter the installation space.
The “behind the scene” part of the installation consists of three little programmes, so-called patches, created in Max/MSP Jitter and Pure Data.
Max/MSP – Jitter and Pure Data are graphical programming environments used mostly for programming multimedia.
The first one - motion tracking patch - detects the movements of the visitor, analyzes it and sends the data into visuals and sound patches.
The second one - visuals patch - uses animation rendered in 3D software and modifies it further, depending on the data received from the motion tracking programme.
The third programme used in the installation is the sound generating engine created by Cabowitz. It receives data from the motion tracking patch and transfers them into sound.

Konstrukce je dynamická prostorová struktura. Je to uzavřený fraktál, který začíná v nano měřítku a končí v makro měřítku. Pro strukturu jsou klíčové základní “nano” prvky a možnosti jejich prostorové skladby. Tím jaké základní prvky vytváří formace, determinují struktury ve větších měřítcích a jejich časoprostorové vlastnosti. Konstrukce tak umožňuje velké množství variací tvaru ve výsledném makro měřítku a zároveň umožňujě efektivní transformaci tvaru v čase. Celá struktura maximálně využívá principů statiky, tak aby efektivně pracovala s množstvím materiálu (resp. množstvím základního prvku) a energie. Důležitý je také objem informací, které si mezi sebou jednotlivé části struktury vyměňují. Konstrukce se evolučně vyvíjí do dokonalejších struktur, postupně obměňuje své části.

The construction is a dynamic spatial structure. It is a closed fractal beginning on a nanometre scale ending on a macro scale. For the structure, the key elements are the basic “nano” entities and variations of its spatial composition. Formations created by the basic entities determine structures on larger scales as well as their properties in time and space. Thus, the construction enables large quantity of shape variations on the resulting macro scale, and at the same time enables effective shape transformation in time. The whole structure uses all principles of the statics in order to work effectively with the material quantity/quantity of the basic element and energy. Volume of information being exchanged between the individual parts of the structure is also important. Construction evolves into more perfect structures in evolutionary process, altering its parts gradually.

Struktura Artificial Symbiont začíná v nano-měřítku.
Tyto dva základní elementy, 4-pod a válec, jsou oba nezávislé výpočetní jednotky. 4-pod element vytváří více rigidní struktury s možností růstu stromových nebo pěnových formací. Lineární řetězce tvořené válcovými elementy vyplňují prostor flexibilní hmotou (podobnou klubku červů). Obě struktury se kombinují v závislosti na požadovaných vlastnostech konstrukce. Základní elementy se pohybují a organizují vzájemnou rotací v místě spoje.

Artificial Symbiont structure starts in nanometre scale.
These two basic elements, 4-pod and cylinder, are independent computing entities. 4-pod element is used for more rigid structures with ability of making tree or foam formations. Linear chains made of cylindrical elements form flexible mass filling the space in order to achieve required density of the material. Both the 4-pods and the cylinders move by rotating at their contact point and therefore the self-organizing structure can transform itself anytime.

Buněčná struktura založená na Voronoi diagramu je použita v micro-měřítku. Deformace a tok buněk samoorganizované struktury je umožněn rotací a pohybem základních elementů v nano-měřítku. Mohou vzniknout rigidní i plastické části.

Cellular spaces based on Voronoi diagram used on micro scale. The ability of the cells to stretch and flow makes it possible to form self-organized structures. This ability is allowed by rotation and movement of basic elements on the nano scale. Rigid or soft parts can be formed.

Struktura pracuje s celkovým množstvím základních prvků a energie použité na transformace, tak aby si zachovala vlastnosti otevřeného konstrukčního systému a zároveň byla efektivní. Geometrické konfigurace, začínající v nano-měřítku, umožňují dimenzovat subtilnější konstrukci než se používá u dnešních budov.

The structure works with a certain amount of mass and energy to gain the ability to form an effective and open construction system. Geometric configurations, when in nanometre scale, allow thinner construction dimensions while having the same bearing capacity of girders as that seen in contemporary buildings.

Lineární části konstrukčního systému mohou tvořit struktury jako popínavé rostliny. Další variabilní prvky konstrukce mohou tvořit flexibilní objem uvnitř pláště budovy. Úroveň hustoty konstrukce je závislá na statice budovy.

Linear parts of construction system make formations resembling creeping plants. Other various elements of the construction have the ability to form flexible volumes within the surfaces of buildings. The degree of density of the volumes depends on the statics of the building.

V makro-měřítku může být Artficial Symbiont reprezentován fluidní hmotou. Artficial Symbiont používá virtuální prostor bez limit vzdálenosti pro zpracování informací. Nahrazuje tak biochemickou nervovou síť.

On a macro scale, the form of the artificial Symbiont flows in a fluid-like manner.
Artificial Symbiont can use virtual space to process information and is a substitution of biochemical neural network, except that it is not restrained by limitations of distances.

Spíše než statické budovy je v projektu artificial symbiont architektura živým organismem. Může se pohybovat a dynamicky transformovat podle potřeb uživatele a charakteru prosředí, ve kterém se nachází. S uživatelem a prostředím inteligentně interreaguje. Učí se. Má paměť. Vyvíjí se.

In the artificial Symbiont project, architecture represents living organism rather than static building. It can move and transform dynamically according to the user’s needs and the surrounding environment’s character. It responses in intelligent manner to the user and the environment. It learns. It remembers. It develops.

Navrhujeme organismus. Takový organismus musí mít tělo, aby se dokázal učit interakcí s prostředím, pomocí receptorů přijímat informace z prostředí a ovlivňovat prostředí svým chováním. Aby mohl přijaté informace třídit a ukládat, vytvářet asociace, a posléze informace vyvolávat a pracovat s nimi, musí tělo obsahovat centra pro zpracování informací a centra paměti. Musí si uvědomit sám sebe, tzn. pracovat s informacemi o sobě samém. Musí se dokázat učit, vytvářet si vlastní systém učení. Tělo musí být dynamické, schopné přeměny a vývoje.
Navrhujeme symbiotický organismus. Takový organimus využívá jiného organismu (nebo jiných organismů) ku svému prospěchu a svou činností je naopak takovému organismu prospěšný. Vytváří se tak pozitivní vazba mezi organismy, vznikají nové kvality symbiotického splynutí. Symbioza organismů je významný evoluční krok, který může být úspěšnou strategií pro přežití obou organismů.
Navrhujeme umělý symbiotický organismus. Navrhujeme mechanického robota, který by měl mít předpoklady pro vytváření pozitivních vazeb nejen s člověkem, ale i s ostatními projevy života na Zemi.

We design organism. Such an organism has to have a body in order to be able to learn through interaction with the environment, to absorb information from it through receptors, and to influence it through its behavior. In order to be able to classify and store the information, create associations and then pull out the information and work with it, body has to contain centers for information processing as well as memory centers. It has to reflect itself, be conscious, i.e. to work with information about itself. It has to be able to learn, to create its own learning/education system. The body must be dynamic, capable to change and develop.
We design a symbiotic organism. Such organism uses another organism (or other organisms) to its own benefit, and at the same time is useful for them as a result of its own activity. Thus, positive links between organisms are being created, establishing new qualities of symbiotic amalgamation. Symbiosis of organisms is a significant evolutionary step that can represent a successful strategy of survival of both organisms.
We design an artificial symbiotic organism. A mechanical robot with necessary prerequisites to create positive links with human beings and also with other living creatures on the Earth.
